thanks, guys for the sweet words and baby wishes.

Random mom thought #1:
He has only been around for 2 days but his face and crying sound are the most familiar things in the world to me. It is like I have been looking at every inch of the face for my whole life. Also, there is strangely nothing more comfortable in the world than when we lay with our chests touching. He is so warm and soft that both of us fall immediately asleep ; )

A Thanksgiving photo [Dec. 15th, 2009|08:30 pm]

amandakenney
I hope everyone is enjoying their December! I've been trying to find the time to get on, read and update. It's been busy bustling around here lately. We are preparing for the holiday and doing a pretty swell job. The decorations are a plenty and plans are set. I do believe Christmas shopping is near completion-pending some packages to come in the mail!

This photo is of Thanksgiving Eve at my parent's house. Also a lovely holiday. I love this time of year!

quick Christmas post… [Dec. 15th, 2009|11:55 pm]

The kids and I are baking cookies cookies and more cookies. We have been a regular Santa’s workshop in the Kenney house. I thought I would pop in quick with a few more photos from around the house. The gumdrop balls were a gift last Christmas from Amanda.

I’ll be back tomorrow with photos and ideas for some of the handmade gifts we have made. Things like gifts for the kids friends, etc.

gift guide ($25 or less) [Dec. 14th, 2009|11:20 pm]
mypapercranecom

Here is a little gift guide for fun…I bought some of these very goods for people on my shopping list :) All photos come from the websites I am linking.

Sarah (the small object) has teamed with Chronicle Books to put out some pretty fantastic sets. This thumbprint notecard set is pretty perfect. I also really love love love her Label + Sticker book too, and a nice price! I know the thumbprint set shows as on backorder, but if you google you can find it for sale on other websites too. Don’t forget to check Sarah’s webshop for her awesome creations as well.

What about Bake It Pretty for a baking-loving friend. I just love the cupcake decorating kit! There is so much other good stuff on the website too, so even if you have a smaller budget you could put together your own box of stuff like a cookie kit–with cookie cutters (she got great ones), sprinkles, etc.

How about some beautiful paper goods from Rifle Paper Co. They are so beautiful that it is hard to choose!

Something from Kitschy Digitals would also be quite nice! The wonderful thing about Danielle’s goodies are they could really cover several people on your shopping list. The digital kits would be great for any scrapbooker, crafter, or you could buy the kits for yourself and then use them to make presents for that camera lover, fruit fan, etc. So good!

And without photos, but just as good as everything above—
-1,000 Places To See Before You Die-this book sounds great to me!
-zines-depending on what zine you buy, these could make excellent presents for most people on your list.
-Ramen Noodle Chocolate Bars-how awesome is that? They also make Tortilla Lime + Salt chocolate, and french toast chocolate as well, yum.

I know this list isn’t very big, but I thought it would still be fun to share!, I am going to try and make another gift guide listing things you can make. I’d love to hear some things you’ve purchased for gifts and are ecited about!

dressing just like momma… [Dec. 14th, 2009|04:44 pm]

momma's jewels

sweatshirt over jammies

big girl shoes!

my daughter’s 15 months old now, nearly 16 months, and growing up fast and furious. of late she’s been completely and totally enamored with clothes and accessories. her own, but also and especially, mine. she’s been wanting to wear my shoes (see her wearing my red clogs, above!), and has even taken to grabbing my shoes (various different pairs) and carrying them around the house with her like a lovey or fetish object. she could have hours of fun just sitting in the closet amongst my pile of shoes, and she’ll often grab a pair and bring them out to me, yearning to try them on. she’s been repeatedly wanting to put on a gold sparkly pair of her mary janes in recent weeks, and has also been grabbing various sweaters and sweatshirts of hers and demanding that they be put on her, sometimes several different ones in rapid succession until she’s satisfied.

it’s no surprise, to pete and i, anyway, that one of her first words was “shoe”.

these behaviors seem adorable, if not a little precocious, no? this being my first (and probably only) child, and also, not knowing much about kids in general beyond my own…help me out, if you know: is this kind of thing normal? other fashionable mommas of girls out there: do your baby girls do this??

at any rate, i think it’s pretty funny and very endearing. i’m wondering if she’ll continue this fascination with clothes and shoes and baubles, or if it’s just a passing toddler or childhood phase, wherein one’s child wants to be “just like mommy” (or daddy, as the case may be)…?

but, taking this further, i also wonder: how much of what we wear, what we love, what we’re into, is influenced by what we see our parents/siblings/family wearing? as i see it, those around us, our families and close associates, have a big influence over us and what we wear. this can and does usually seem to go one of two ways (sometimes both, or one way or the other depending on where you are in your life or development at a given juncture): one, you can dress just like/or similar to mom and/or dad (or like the rest of your family), or you can try and do the exact opposite, as a way to exert independence and set oneself apart from whom you sprang. going with what you know, or (un)consciously going against it.

i know for me, it was like this: it went both ways. i wanted, and still want to be a lot like my parents, i have some similarities in my tastes in relation to them, but have always had a stubborn streak that made me want to be my own person, stylistically, and otherwise.

my dad’s style is very trad, very new-england in the 1960s, very collegiate, very ivy league. and he looks amazing. i definitely see myself embracing similar tastes, a lot of times, leaning back on classics as foundation in my wardrobe, albeit usually wearing them with more than a little cheeky twist (unexpected fabrics, odd yet calculated pairings of pieces, colors, textures, etc.). dad also loves color, just like moi (boy howdy!)…we’re both unafraid to wear it. as for mom, i still have a picture of her in my mind’s eye that includes her sporting a chin-length blonde bob (my hair is usually some variation on the same), and if i could get my hands on some of the things she wore in the 1970s (like that long gone, camel-colored a-line wool jumper she had!) i’d be a happy, happy woman.

but…there are a good many things i love and wear that i doubt my parents would ever consider in a million eons…and that’s what makes me *me*, my tastes mine. and that’s fine. but my parents are, in many ways, the core of me, the jumping off point from which i come, stylistically.

maybe it’s a little like this: you take a little from what you know, mix it with who you are inside, and volia…you have your own personal style statement. or something like that.

i can’t wait to see who my little poppy flower becomes. will she continue to love all the bright colors, like i do? will she still be into the shoes, the jewelry, the clothes? will she love getting dressed up as much as i do? will she clamor to wear my old things when she’s older? or will she eschew it all, in favor of her own different and delightful tastes and whims? maybe she’ll indulge in a little of both, remixing things her own way, playing with influences and trends and all of it. either way, it will be fascinating to watch her grow and watch her evolve, stylistically, and otherwise.

Hi Frank,

Last Saturday, my daughter went to the funeral of her 21-year-old friend, Jeff, who committed suicide. I made a donation in his memory to the Kristen Brooks Hope Center. I noted that on the donation form. In today's mail, I received a sympathy card from Reese Butler. I was stunned.

He thanked me and offered assistance to Jeff's family. I am touched beyond words that Reese took the time to send this card and his words of encouragement. I will forward the card to Jeff's family. Please continue to get the word out about the work the Kristen Books Hope Center does... and maybe there will be fewer of us grieving this time next year.

lets make ornaments! [Dec. 12th, 2009|05:52 pm]
mypapercranecom

In November I signed the kids and I up for the Crafty Crow’s annual ornament swap. My friend Katie had done it the previous year, and it sounded like such fun. Plus the theme this year was Fairy Tales so how could we resist. Of course we went the route of gnomes + mushrooms (I am predictable like that). We had so much fun making these ornaments, and most of the things were stuff we had on hand. I did a little how-to below, but you could really vary the whole thing by using different colors and different little toys on the ornaments themselves. I think we are even going to pick up some more wooden bases to make some for our friends too.

1. Materials-Things you’ll need to make the ornaments are plain wood circles (you could also cut these bases if you have some thick fallen branches around), pipe cleaners (I bought these red and white ones but you could use two colors and twist them together yourself), some sort of fabrics to cover the wood base (I have a big green velvet ribbon, and red and white polka dot ribbon, but you could use felt) glue gun, and trinkets and toys for top (most of what we used are cake toppers)

2. Trace your wood circles onto the back side of the material you are covering the wood discs with. Cut them out and set aside.

3. Bend one pipe cleaner on each end so it forms the handle. Use the hot glue to glue this down to the wood base. Then cover both sides of the wood base (covering the ends of the handle too) with the circles of fabric that you cut out in step 2.

4. Now you can glue pipe cleaners around the entire edge of your bases, or use ribbon, etc. Then have fun arranging all your trinkets on top, and glue in place!

the Christmas Cheer continues! [Dec. 9th, 2009|09:33 pm]
mypapercranecom

I hope you won’t mind all the holiday related posts, but with two snows, and all these decorations it is keeping me in the holiday mood non-stop. Last night we went to my youngest son’s Christmas play. He was elf #12 and had his own little lines to memorize, and one elf costume that I had to sew. The play was filled with songs, costumes, and was so cute.

Then last night we had another snow storm (which almost all of has been washed away by the sporadic rain today) I’m loving all the winter weather, I was afraid we wouldn’t see snow until after Christmas, and we’ve had it twice!

We have also been doing an advent calendar this year and that has been lots of fun. We normally do the chocolate ones or Playmobil etc. This year I took a cue from my friend Katie and made an advent calendar filled with activities instead. I had this cute Martha Stewart paper house that I got last year on clearance. So I sat down and made rhymes (like Katie) for each day. Some of the activities include making a thermos of cocoa for a walk in the woods, cutting out snowflakes to hang, a library trip specifically for Christmas books, and making ornaments for a swap we are involved in. There are easier ones for busy nights like wrapping gifts together, or listening to Christmas records, etc. My 14 yr. old did roll his eyes a bit the first few times, but now he seems to look forward to the stuff as much as his younger brother. I look forward to them myself, and the great thing about the house is if something comes up the slips of paper can easily be switched around last minute.

We are going to go get our Christmas tree tomorrow, and then I’ll take some photos of the house all decorated!

PASSA-SE QUALQUER COISA COMIGO

Passa-se qualquer coisa comigo
a acreditar nos meus
sentidos isto não é só
outra distracção minha cara
Continuo atado
na mesma velha pele
nas ideias puras e nas grandes aspirações
pixota limpa cheia de saúde
custe o que custar
mas começam-me os pés
a dizer coisas
de si
da sua nova relação com
as minhas mãos coração cabelo e olhos

Passa-se qualquer coisa comigo
se pudesse perguntava-te
sentiste isto alguma vez
mas estás tão longe
tu esta noite não penso
que ouvisses e depois
a minha voz também foi afectada

Passa-se qualquer coisa comigo
não te admires se
ao acordares um dia a este claro
sol mediterrânico olhares
para mim e descobrires uma mulher

que simplesmente move os lábios
e tenta

Christmas shopping with Katie [Dec. 8th, 2009|10:47 pm]
mypapercranecom

Today was a lovely day with my bestie Katie. She had some extra vacation time so she took the day off so we could do so Christmas shopping. Our shopping including all the best thrift shops, the candy shop downtown, and lunch out…it was absolutely grand :)

I spotted that cute mushroom gnome in one of the shops, and I want to try and make my own. The bottom photo is part of the Christmas window display the candy shop does, Santa’s sleigh zooms around jars filled with candy, I love it! I tried to get a better photo of the whole thing but the sun was shining really brightly so this is all I was able to get.

back from Massachusettes [Dec. 7th, 2009|04:52 pm]
mypapercranecom

We are back from Boston MA, a whirlwind of a trip! Tom, the kids and I headed out Friday aiming for Amherst MA to make the trip there slightly shorter and to check out the Eric Carle Picture book museum. The museum is on the small side but still very lovely. It was amazing to see things like Mary Blair’s paintings up close.

There was snow, beautiful snow–which made up for us missing the big snowfall back home. Two hotel stays with beds for jumping, Kam Man Marketplace for shopping, and one Halloween outlet (which didn’t live up to the stuff we read about it, but oh well) The show was great as usual. The photo up there was taken at the very end, thanks to everyone who came out, said hello, or bought some goods!

Then after the show we packed up and headed home—a very long 7 hour drive. We didn’t get home till almost 3am, and it felt like the drive would never ever end. So happy to be home and ready to get into full on Christmas mode!! I have to go pack some orders, and I will update my Etsy with the goods I have left some time this afternoon.

colette patterns: new retro loveliness [Dec. 7th, 2009|05:06 pm]

colette1.png

colette2.png

(images via colette patterns)

have you seen the new patterns from colette patterns, the brainchild of the incredibly talented sarai of sweet sassafrass? as of this past few weeks, she’s added the stunning oolong dress, lady grey coat, and sensha blouse you see above (and several more patterns!!) to her already gorgeous, vintage-influenced, figure-flattering pattern offerings. i love how each of her patterns come packed inside a little booklet that’s lovingly designed and jammed full of incredibly thorough and well-written instructions. the patterns themselves sit nicely in a little built in fold in the back of said booklet…totally smart packaging design, sarai!

i’ve made the beignet, a high-wasted button up the front skirt (in a navy blue pique) and i love it! so i can say that as far as i am concerned, colette patterns come highly recommended!

have you made any of the colette patterns? which ones? how did it go? are you a fan too? :)

a related aside: wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were more indie pattern companies out there, offering things to suit different whims and tastes, that maybe the big pattern companies can’t reach or address (because they are perhaps pursuing more average tastes?)…what a wonderful idea, no? do you know of any other great, small, stylish pattern companies? do share!

outsapop’s amazing trashion DIY sweater-cape [Dec. 7th, 2009|05:05 pm]

take a gander at this glorious patchwork DIY sweater-cape made by finland’s outi of outsapop trashion, above! the sweater-cape and instructions on how to make one for yourself were recently published in the helsingin sanomat. she graciously re-printed the instructions on her blog, in this post, along with an english translation. how AWESOME. thank you, outi!! the project looks complicated, yes, but really, all it takes is some time and a little effort, and whoa, are the results stunning, or what??

(back in the bronx, in a storage unit, i’ve got some piles of felted sweaters that would be put to good good use using this pattern! if i ever get around to using them and making one of these, you’ll be hearing about it…) :)

Birthday, Birthday [Dec. 6th, 2009|09:20 pm]

amandakenney
Life has been busy, but so, so good. Lots of Christmas carol singing, Sean playing guitar, while we sing. Hot coffee and lattes a lot!

Yesterday, it snowed and snowed throughout the morning and afternoon. We ended up with a couple inches and a heavenly site when we were out for my birthday. In the morning we sat and enjoyed hot coffee at the table, while watching our son romp in the snow, squealing. And then wet coats and shoes were bumping in the drier.

My birthday is today. I have been blessed with a wonderful weekend of one festivity after another. Last night we went out for Italian and wine and to see A Christmas Carol (so good and scary!). Then pancakes this morning, too many presents (thank you Black Friday for being around my birthday! New Kitchenaid Mixer, GPS, Sweater, Pj pants, Shutter release cable and Seinfeld seasons on DVD! I'm spoiled!), put up Christmas lights on the house (which are now on and lighting the entire front yard!) and lots of cake! I love my boys!

When I went to my first gynecologist appointment at age 18, it was with a female.  Since she was part of a family practice, she had also recently examined my mom, and when she tried to make girl talk, she told me, "Wow! Deep vaginas must run in the family".

Then, she sang "come out, come out wherever you are" to my cervix.  I'm 26 now, and I have only been to male gynecologists since then.  Whew.

I always figured the male gynecologist paid more attention in school (it's the vagina.. come on..).

About 3 hours ago I wanted to do just that, skip Christmas for once, but my best friend just talked to me, and I do not think she knows the impact she just had on my perspective...

I am going home for Christmas. I'm scared my family will realize I'm addicted to cocaine again.

Even if you don't post this secret Frank, please post a trusted drug help hotline on your site. It's so hard for us to go home at this time, because even if we want to get better, we often just can't do it in time.  We just remember what we used to be like, and how Christmas used to be.

Christmas is the hardest time to be an addict.

As someone who loves an addict, all my family wants for Christmas is for our addict to come home, and let us help. It would be the best Christmas gift ever. We are waiting with open arms for you.

Whenever I am wearing clothing and shopping in the store I got it from, I secretly hope they will give me a discount.

Dear Frank,

Last year I mailed you two postcards, "Next year, I want to get my tree with you" and "I will not wear mistletoe to work," both referring to the same crush.

I was bowled over just now to see that someone had wondered how my first secret turned out.

This year, I will celebrate the holiday with someone wonderful . . . but he's not the guy I wrote those secrets about. Even if I hadn't fallen in love this year, this Christmas would find me fairly indifferent to the person I mentioned in that postcard.

Time work wonders.

But if you left it up to me
Everyday would be
A holiday from real

Oh, it's a picture of perfection
Ah, and the postcards gonna read. . .

Josh read somewhere about a "push present" when you give your lady friend a present for pushing your huge watermelon of a spawn out of her uterus. He thought that was kind of abnoxious and funny at the same time so he got me this awesomeeeeee phone as my push present

He is now out in the freezing rain buying me milk because I NEED milk to eat cookies with.

Josh is being so nice to me and I am being such a huge mega bitch back. I cannot wait till Wyatt is out so I maybe can act like a human again.

9 more days, folks....

if you were putting together a group blog where everybody illustrates sections of a favorite book of theirs monthly, what would you call it?

i am, and i need to figure this out fast. it was supposed to be called picture book club, but there's another blog with that name so all i can think of are things like books with pictures in them, picture book group, etc.
